Mulan tale draws applause, praise

In front of a packed hall at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, on Friday, dancer Hao Ruoqi gracefully moved across the stage as she wielded her sword against her opponent. Hao, portraying the heroine Hua Mulan, was the star of Ningbo Performing Arts Group's Chinese dance drama Mulan. Based on the beloved folklore of family devotion, loyalty and love, Mulan tells the tale of a young woman in ancient China who disguises herself as a man to take her father's place in the army. This modern interpretation re-imagines the classic tale of the legendary female Chinese warrior Hua Mulan, exploring the themes of self-identity and empowerment through remarkable and compelling dance numbers and exquisite music. Hao, a member of the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater, said there might be a thousand versions of Mulan in a thousand people's eyes, but there are things common to the audience despite the cultural and geographical differences. "I think the love and peace emanated from Mulan is understandable and accepted both in China and the United States," she told China Daily. Lisa Richards Toney, president and chief executive officer of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, said what impressed her was not just the ferocity of the warrior spirit that Mulan displayed, but also her love for humanity. "It was really good. We've just seen the Disney version, it's a lot different than that. But we really appreciate the story itself," Rachel Cavanaugh, a resident from Leesburg, Virginia, said. "I think it focuses on her power as a woman." Before the premiere, Li Baozong, general manager of China Arts and Entertainment Group, said though the Mulan story is being presented in a new way, it will evoke similar feelings as it does in China. "The loyalty, filial piety and patriotism in this production are also common emotions of mankind, and I believe that the American audience will certainly resonate with," Li said. Speaking at a reception, Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng said Mulan's courage, her love for her family and country, and for peace are qualities cherished in both Chinese and US societies. The story of Hua Mulan has inspired numerous productions, including Disney's 1998 animated film and 2020 live-action movie.

DeSantis invokes China ‘boogeyman’ narrative amid flailing campaign

It was a desperately needed moment of grandeur for Ron DeSantis: the Florida governor’s strongman act over China briefly lifting his stuttering presidential campaign during last week’s Republican primary debate in California.

But what DeSantis left unsaid as he railed against China’s growing global influence, while promising a “hard power” approach to Beijing should he win the White House, was how his posturing was hurting students and families back in his home state.

Jimmy Lai: Hong Kong mogul, activist ... and now a prisoner for 1,000 days

He went from rags to riches before his anti-communist newspaper fell foul of security forces. Now Lai’s plight tells of a city forced to live in the shadow of Xi’s authoritarian China

It was not the first time in his long and eventful career that media mogul Jimmy Lai became the story, and it wouldn’t be the last. But it was certainly the most dramatic. On 10 August 2020, about 200 police officers frogmarched 72-year-old Lai out of the offices of his embattled newspaper, Apple Daily, as they conducted a raid on the publication, which had vigorously supported Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests. More than 10,000 people tuned in to watch as the newspaper’s reporters defied police warnings and streamed the scene live on Facebook.

As if to underline the extent to which the authorities now controlled the story, Lai had actually been arrested at his home earlier that morning. He had been brought to the offices to oversee one of the final blows to the newspaper that he had founded 25 years earlier. It was intended as a final humiliation for the outspoken tycoon who had spent his adult life opposing the Chinese Communist party (CCP) and its increasing grip on Hong Kong. The next day the paper’s front page showed a picture of Lai in handcuffs, with the headline “Apple Daily must fight on”. It was forced to close just under one year later, after its assets were frozen.

‘Risk of miscalculation’ rises in South China Sea as Beijing ramps up aggressive tactics

The video, taken on Monday near the fiercely contested Scarborough Shoal, shows the Philippines’ mission to remove what it described as a hazardous floating barrier installed by China’s coast guard. It had been erected to cut off access to Philippine boats, the Philippine coast guard alleged, accusing their counterparts of violating international law. Chinese group’s statement about chair Hui Ka Yan piles on the woe for once top-selling property developer

The founder of China’s Evergrande is being investigated over suspected “illegal crimes”, the group has said, as creditors become increasingly concerned about the prospects of the world’s most indebted property developer.

Evergrande Group, which has more than $300bn (£245bn) in total liabilities, did not say whether Hui Ka Yan was still in a position to run the company, or what crimes he was being investigated for.

‘Playing the China card’ or a serious regional threat? Timor-Leste’s new deal with Beijing

The upgrading of ties with Beijing caught regional leaders by surprise, but experts say it could be a strategy to secure investment from Australia

It lies just to the north of Australia, but the tiny and impoverished country of Timor-Leste is strengthening ties with China as it faces a looming fiscal crisis – a move that comes after decades of mistreatment by Canberra and raises difficult questions for its leaders.

Timor-Leste, which is situated 680km from Darwin and has massive and untapped undersea resources, surprised the region last week when it formally upgraded bilateral relations with China. A joint statement included plans to enhance military cooperation and explore developments of Timor-Leste’s oil and gas resources.

The Guardian view on disappearances in China: silence sends a sinister message | Editorial

Several senior officials have conspicuously vanished. But it is ordinary people, especially Uyghurs, who are most vulnerable

In 1971, Lin Biao, hailed by China as Mao Zedong’s successor, fell from grace, fled the country and was killed in an aircrash in Mongolia. Despite his prominence, it was weeks before the public was told of his death, and months before any explanation was offered. The recent spate of disappearances from China’s top echelons is hardly as seismic. They have happened in calmer political waters, far from the Cultural Revolution’s turmoil. But they speak to the way that politics still operates in Beijing. The glaring absences of senior officials are eventually followed by a belated narrative of their downfall in the rumour mill and then state media.

When Qin Gang, the foreign minister, vanished from public view in June, it was particularly conspicuous given his diplomatic role. It was almost a month before authorities confirmed that he had been removed from his post. A few weeks later, China’s defence minister, Li Shangfu, also failed to appear at scheduled meetings with foreign officials. Reuters has reported that he is being investigated over corruption in military procurement. The two most senior generals overseeing nuclear and conventional land-based missiles had already been replaced at the beginning of August. One was reportedly taken away by corruption investigators.

Why you will never hear an Australian leader call out Indonesia on West Papua

Australia is willing to turn a blind eye to alleged human rights abuses in West Papua because alienating Indonesia is not worth the risk as China jostles for regional influence

As reported by the Guardian, Australia is seeking to strengthen its defence relationship with Indonesia, despite well-documented human rights abuses by the Indonesian military in West Papua.

As tens of thousands of West Papuan civilians are turned into refugees in their own land and innocents are allegedly tortured and gunned down by Indonesian soldiers, Australia is embarking on further training and support for the Indonesian military and its counter-terrorism police.

Military exercises near Taiwan aimed at combating ‘arrogance’ of separatists, says China

Increased frequency of Chinese drills has raised the risk of events ‘getting out of hand’, the island’s defence minister said

China’s government has said that recent drills near Taiwan were aimed at combating the “arrogance” of separatist forces, after Taipei reported a rise in military activity in recent weeks, including exercises on land facing the island.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory – a claim Taipei rejects – has said this month that it had observed dozens of fighters, drones, bombers and other aircraft, as well as warships and the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, operating nearby.
