Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars known internationally as the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. The appearance of Matariki in the midwinter sky marks the beginning of the Māori New Year in New Zealand. Traditionally, this is a time for Māori communities to come together to remember those who have passed away, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. It is also a period for giving thanks for the harvest and sharing food with family and friends. Each star in the Matariki cluster has its own meaning, often related to health, wellbeing, and the environment.

The celebration of Matariki includes cultural activities such as singing, dancing, storytelling, and communal feasting. It is a time of reflection, renewal, and strengthening of community bonds. Since 2022, Matariki has been recognized as a public holiday in New Zealand, highlighting its importance not only to Māori but to the whole nation.

Chinese Explanation
